Self-aligning ball bearings feature either cylindrical or tapered bore designs, with retainers manufactured from materials such as steel plate or synthetic resin. Their defining characteristic is the spherical outer raceway, which provides self-aligning capability to compensate for misalignment and shaft deflection errors. However, the relative inclination between inner and outer rings must not exceed 3 degrees.

Self-aligning ball bearings incorporate spherical balls between an inner ring with two raceways and an outer ring featuring a spherical raceway. The curvature centre of the outer ring raceway aligns with the bearing's centre, conferring the same self-aligning capability as self-aligning ball bearings. They automatically adjust to shaft or housing deflection without increasing bearing load. Self-aligning roller bearings can withstand radial loads and axial loads in both directions. They possess high radial load capacity and are suitable for applications involving heavy loads and impact loads. Bearings with a tapered bore on the inner ring can be mounted directly or installed on cylindrical shafts using a locking sleeve or withdrawal sleeve. Cages are manufactured using stamped steel plate, moulded polyamide, or turned copper alloy.
